Multitouch is the touch-screen technology that allows you to put two fingers on an iPhone and pinch or pull to zoom in and out. Direct touch surfaces that are orders of magnitude larger than tabletops by integrating high-resolution multi-touch sensing into back-projected floors.

The key factor of the shown design is that it is based on frustrated total internal reflection sensing. FTIR allows it to identify and track users based on their sole patterns. The floor recognizes foot postures, distinguishes users who interact from people walking by, and enables high-precision interaction. In addition, the floor can approximate users' head positions based on the pressure profile in the soles and it extracts enough details from soles to allow users to play first person shooters by balancing their feet.

LookTel combines the power of a Smartphone with advanced "artificial vision" software to create a helpful electronic assistant for anyone who is visually impaired or blind. You can use LookTel to automatically scan and recognize objects such as money, packaged goods, CDs, DVDs, and medication bottles, as well as landmarks. Point the device video camera at what you wish to "see" and it will pronounce the name very quickly in clear and easy to understand speech. LookTel can be taught to recognize all the objects and landmarks you wish to identify. With a small amount of help from a sighted assistant one can easily teach LookTel to be your helpful assistant for many tasks where vision makes a difference in your independence. LookTel also incorporates a text reader allowing users to get access to print media.

RISE OF THE MACHINES?

Bomb disposal robots are enlisted straight from the battlefields of Afghanistan to help human colleagues extinguish fires in the capital. Nina Teggarty reports for More4 News.



Fire-fighting robots have been demonstrating how they can help their human colleagues in Greater London and the Home Counties.

Several different types of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) are in operation but it's thought their biggest merit is tackling highly-destructive gas cylinders which could explode at any moment.

The robo-firefighters are also a valuable asset when it comes to the initial assessment of a fire scene. Standard Fire & Rescue Service procedure is to impose an hazard zone of 200m for up to 24 hours. But by sending in the robots, major transport disruption and unnecessary evacuation procedure can be avoided.

The robot service is delivered by QinetiQ and funded jointly by Network Rail, the Highways Agency and Transport for London, in collaboration with the London Fire Brigade.
